Why does AI sometimes get things wrong?

TideProof editorial guide · Reviewed 2026-09-14

An AI system can generate a plausible response without establishing that every detail is true. It may misunderstand the request, lack needed information, or produce an unsupported detail. The confident style of an answer is not a dependable measure of its accuracy.

You can still use it productively by matching the review to the task. Check names, numbers, dates, and important claims against reliable originals. When a result affects a consequential decision, use the appropriate qualified source rather than treating the assistant's explanation as the final authority.
