What does generative AI mean?

TideProof editorial guide · Reviewed 2026-09-14

Generative AI produces new material in response to a request, such as text, images, audio, or computer code. A writing assistant that drafts a customer email is using generative AI. A system that only sorts transactions into existing categories may be doing a different kind of AI task.

Generating something does not make it correct, original in every respect, or ready to use. Treat the result as material to review. An easy first experiment is asking for several ways to explain a familiar idea, then choosing and improving the version that fits.
