What is an AI agent?

TideProof editorial guide · Reviewed 2026-09-14

An AI agent is generally a system that can work through steps toward a goal, often using tools rather than only producing a reply. Depending on its design and permissions, it might search information, prepare files, or interact with other software.

The word agent does not tell you how reliable or independent a product is. Before using one, understand what it can access and what it can change. A useful first task is a bounded research summary that you review, rather than an action involving your money or accounts.
