What AI skills should I look for when hiring?

TideProof editorial guide · Reviewed 2026-09-14

Look for practical judgment as well as tool familiarity. A useful candidate can explain a task clearly, choose suitable information, check the result, recognize uncertainty, and describe when a human should decide. Knowing many tool names is not the same as doing dependable work.

Ask for a relevant example and let the person explain their own contribution, including any AI assistance. If you use a work sample, make expectations and permitted tools clear and assess it consistently. Focus on the actual job requirements rather than assuming that age, background, or enthusiasm predicts AI ability.
